This guide will go over the different techniques for taking pictures of content in VTOL VR. There are two main methods for taking in-game pictures:

This guide will go over both of those methods and how to use them properly.

The Spectator Camera

The Spectator Camera (commonly abbreviated as S-CAM) is a function available to all playable aircraft for taking gameplay pictures or videos. It is by far the best option available for more cinematic pictures, as it allows for a number of different angles and perspectives to be achieved for picture-taking.

The Developer Camera

The Developer Camera is an alternate method for picture-taking using a leftover feature from the early days of VTOL VR's development. Unlike the Spectator Camera, the Developer Camera is controlled entirely through the desktop.

To access it, make a pilot named "devcam" launch a test scenario then simply place your VR headset aside and press the Insert key on your keyboard (Sometimes Shift also needs to be held). This will open up the Developer Camera and focus on your current aircraft.

You can switch between viewing different entities (Units or missiles) with the [ and ] keys. You can use the left mouse button for orbiting the camera around the unit, the right mouse button for orbiting the camera's focus point around the camera itself, and mouse wheel scrolling for controlling the current zoom level (the distance from the camera to the entity being viewed). Once you have a good angle on your selected unit, use Steam's Screenshot function (the F12 key by default) to acquire your picture.

Other Developer Camera keybinds:

  • End: Restarts the mission (singleplayer only)
  • Del(ete) key: Ends the mission and returns to the prior game scene
  • V: Toggles horizontal camera alignment with the selected entity
  • Right click: Orbits the camera around the designated entity
  • Right Shift + Tab: Enable left click gun (singleplayer only)
  • , (comma): Decreases simulation speed (singleplayer only)
  • . (period): Increases simulation speed (singleplayer only, toggles between x2 and x4 speeds)
  • /: Resets simulation speed to default value (singleplayer only)

If new entities spawn in while the Developer Camera is active, you will have to restart the Developer Camera to be able to view them.

CAUTION: The Developer Camera is a deprecated feature of VTOL VR and is no longer officially supported by the developer. Players will encounter game glitches with continued use of this tool. The most common known glitches are rendering errors and physics destabilization, which can lead to unintended game behavior over time. Do not use the Developer Camera unless it is needed and do not use it for longer than it is required.
