Cannons
Cannons are the main armament available to both playable and AI controlled aircraft. Each playable aircraft has at least one cannon available:
- AV-42C: GAU-8 Avenger, M230
- F/A-26B: M62 Vulcan
- F-45A: GAU-22 Redeemer
- AH-94: GAU-94, M230
- T-55: M62 Vulcan
- EF-24G: M62 Vulcan
Gunsight
Every fixed cannon features a gunsight displayed on the aircraft's HUD, with a cross showing the aimpoint of the gun.
By default, the gunsight appears in a Funnel configuration, with the two parallel lines moving with the aircraft. When aimed at the ground, a circle will appear, displaying the predicted impact point of the cannon rounds. This sight does not require a lock of any onto a target and will always display first.
When a target is locked on to with a TGP or a radar, the gunsight will change to the Pipper configuration, giving a more accurate firing solution on the target. This mode can much more accurately track movements of a target and adjust accordingly.
The AH-94 lacks either sight configuration and opts for its own plus-shaped crosshair. The cannons are set to gimbal by default and can be aimed via the TADS or the co-pilot gunner's helmet.
Any target locked by the TADS or Radar will also give a more accurate firing solution on the target.
Cannon Info
GAU-8 Avenger |
---|
The GAU-8 Avenger is a seven-barreled 30mm hydraulically driven Gatling-style rotary cannon. It was designed specifically for the anti-tank role, with its depleted uranium rounds easily penetrating armored vehicles and structures. It is only available to the AV-42C. |
M230 |
---|
The M230 is a single barreled 30mm gimbal-mounted chain gun, available to the AH-94 and AV-42C. While the M230 suffers from a lack of accuracy at ranges above 1.5 km, its powerful damage output and large splash radius of its projectiles can make up for these shortcomings. This makes it a very capable AoE weapon against various light targets such as Infantry or APC's. An aircraft equipped with an M230 can also act as a very effective tank buster at close ranges. Due to being mounted on a gimbal, the M230 will activate a speed-lock once the aircraft has reached a speed of 110m/s IAS. During this lock, the cannon will be fixed forward and function identically to other fixed guns such as the M62 Vulcan or GAU-8. Despite being identical in all other stats, the AH-94's M230 is more expensive, being priced at $1650 instead of the AV-42C's $1450. |
M62 Vulcan |
---|
GAU-22 Redeemer |
---|
The GAU-22 Redeemer is an internally mounted four-barreled 25mm Gatling-style rotary cannon exclusively used by the F-45A. |
GAU-94 |
---|
The GAU-94 is a three-barreled Gatling-style rotary cannon chambered in 20mm. It is exclusive to the AH-94 attack helicopter. It is mounted on a gimbal and can use either the TADS or the Pilot's head tracking mode for aiming. Similarly to the M230 chain gun, the GAU-94 will also enter a speed-lock once the aircraft has reached a speed of 110m/s IAS. Thanks to the GAU-94's high accuracy, it can successfully destroy various lightly armored targets up to 5.5 km away. |
