"An older semi-active radar guided medium range air-to-air missile. The missile requires a radar lock from launch until impact."
― Weapon Description

The AIM-7 Sparrow is a semi-active radar-homing Air-to-Air missile available for the F/A-26B, T-55 and EF-24G.

The AIM-7 is a lower tech version of the AIM-120C, used in missions where AIM-120Cs aren't available. Its maximum range and speed in the air are similar to the AIM-120C, making it a perfectly decent missile for attacking other airborne threats. When fired, it relies on the firing aircraft's built-in radar to calculate a lead-pursuit course to its target, allowing it to account for fast-moving aircraft and adapt more easily to flight maneuvers.

Usage

When firing the AIM-7 at an enemy radar contact, the deploying aircraft must maintain a hard lock on the designated target while the missile intercepts its target.

If the lock is broken, a target can be reacquired if within field of view of the missile seeker. An AIM-7's status will redisplay its Time-to-Impact indicator on the bottom left of the HUD if the reacquire is successful, otherwise it will remain as LOST and should be considered a miss.

Unlike the AIM-120C, which can pitbull indiscriminately on any target, the AIM-7 can safely be used against enemies with friendly aircraft in close proximity, making it a useful support weapon even when the more advanced missile is available.

The AIM-7 can also be fired in can be fired in Home-on-jam (HOJ) mode which allow it to home in on sources of noise jamming when the aircraft's radar is unable to locate the target normally.[1]

Deployment

  1. Enable the Master Arm switch.
  2. Open the RADAR page on an MFD screen and set it to SOI.
  3. Turn on the aircraft's radar.
  4. Select the AIM-7 as your current weapon.
  5. While holding the flight stick, use the thumb stick to slew the TAC over an air target. Click-in the thumb stick once for TWS on the target. Click it again to switch to STT.
    • Note: The AIM-7 can only be fired using the STT tracking mode.
  6. Once in range, the Range Launch Authorization Lights will come on and the aircraft's Voice Warning System will announce: "Shoot!" Pull the trigger to fire the missile.
    • When launched, the missile will display a Time-to-Impact indicator on the HUD, displaying the letter T next to the estimated time.
  7. The launching aircraft must maintain a constant radar lock on the target until the missile reaches its target.
    • If the lock is dropped: use the thumb stick to attempt to re-lock the target. Check the Time-to-Impact indicator for confirmation that the target is reacquired.
